Foreign Languages
Majors, Minors and Concentrations
The Foreign Languages department seeks to provide students with the skills needed to speak, read, write and comprehend at least one foreign language. Graduates develop an appreciation of cultural diversity by understanding the relationship a language and its respective culture. The foreign language curriculum equips students with the skills to conduct research and use computer applications in a different language. The program provides a solid foundation for those who wish to pursue a career or graduate studies in a foreign language.
Majors: French and Spanish
Minors: French, Spanish and German
Concentrations: Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Classics and the Ancient Mediterranean World
Additional Courses: Chinese (Mandarin), Greek, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, and English as a second language
Study Abroad
Studying abroad assists students in developing a fundamental understanding of a culture different from their own. Because learning firsthand is important, Spanish and French majors are required to complete a departmentally approved course of study abroad as part of their major. This may include an intensive learning travel course or a summer, semester or year abroad with a department approved program.
Facilities and Resources
The Language Resource Center (LRC) provides students with audio, video, and technological methods of learning and practicing the foreign languages offered at Roanoke College. Self-tutoring software is available for students wanting to improve their language skills at their own time. A satellite dish with French, Italian and Spanish programs, interactive web sites and DVD recorders allow students to watch foreign language television and practice with authentic materials. Multimedia classrooms facilitate the learning experience during regular class periods.
