Undergraduate Research Assistants Program (URAP) for Psychology

URAP is a program unique to Roanoke College. Eight new freshman students are identified each year and are invited to join the program. They work as research assistants with a member of the Roanoke College faculty on an original research project of interest to both the URAP scholar and to the faculty mentor.

They are awarded a stipend of $2,000 per year, renewable for up to three additional years. In addition to the stipend the URAP scholar becomes a member of a research team working on a project which generally will lead to publication in a professional journal and/or presentation at a professional conference.

Examples of Psychology URAP Student Projects:

What do Music, Love and Humor have in Common?
Julie Recher '08 and Lauren Mutispaugh '09 | Dr. Christopher Buchholz
In this project the research assistant will participate in an experiment collecting data on how individuals react emotionally to different songs. Analysis of the data will contribute to our understanding of how emotions are related to our psychological health and happiness.

Decision Making in Social Dilemmas
Megan Poore | Dr. Curt Camac
Why do some people make decisions based primarily on their immediate self-interest while other people decide on actions based on the overall good of the group, or to punish selfish members of the group? In this project the research assistant will participate in scientific studies designed to answer such questions. Link to more about this project.
