Welcome to the website of the Foreign Language Department of Roanoke College. The Foreign Language Department, the offices of our faculty and secretary, the language lab, and other classrooms are all housed in Lucas Hall. Even though Lucas is one of the oldest buildings on campus, our Language Resource Center (LRC) contains state-of-the-art equipment with 30 computer stations complete with the capacity for using audio tapes, CDs, and CD ROMs. We have the latest in foreign language software and films available for student use, fast speed audio tape and CD duplicators, and computer-based overhead projection systems.
General Information
The Foreign Language Department offers majors in French and Spanish; minors in German, French, and Spanish; and a concentration in Latin American Studies. In addition, we teach courses in Greek, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, and English as a second language.
Department Goals
The Foreign Languages Department at Roanoke College offers programs of study that are designed to support a liberal arts education and the mission statement of the college. The faculty seeks to provide all Roanoke College students the opportunity to develop the skills needed to speak, read, write, and comprehend at least one foreign language. The foreign language courses also seek to assist students in developing a fundamental understanding of another culture different from their own.
The department offers instruction in French, Spanish, and German from the elementary through the advanced level and in the other foreign languages from the elementary through the intermediate level. Advanced specialized courses cover literature, culture, Foreign Language for business use, contemporary issues, and literary analysis.
Students are taught the relationship between a specific culture and its language and to develop an appreciation for cultural diversity. The foreign language curriculum provides students with opportunities to use foreign language word-processing systems and presentation software and to access information from the web, send and receive e-mail in the United States and abroad, and make use of appropriate bibliographic on-line indexes as well as research engines to compile information and assist in research.
The Department's curriculum provides a solid foundation for students who intend to pursue a professional career or graduate studies in a foreign language. To this end, the Department aspires to create a supportive learning environment in which faculty and students work together in the pursuit of all aspects of knowledge related to foreign language study.
