Greetings from the President

Greetings from Roanoke College and thank you for your inquiry about our international programs. The College welcomes students from many countries each year, and we encourage all our students to complete part of their academic training outside the United States.

Roanoke has enrolled international students since the 1880s when the first students from Europe, Japan, Mexico and Korea came to Salem. Today, international students from around the world study here, including young scholars from Peru, Japan, England, Costa Rica, Russia, Bolivia, Korea, Mexico, France, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Austria, China and Bulgaria. The College offers a wide variety of courses in 34 academic disciplines, and financial support is awarded to the most talented students on a competitive basis.

Roanoke College faculty possesses distinguished credentials and they are engaged in original research. For example, Dr. Joshua Rubongoya has recently published "Regime Hegemony in Museveni's Uganda: Pax Musevenica." This is an award-winning study of his native Uganda and democratization in Africa.

Faculty have devised innovative courses for the special May Intensive Learning program, such as the Camino de Santiago, which follows the medieval pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, or the new (January 2008) course on Gandhi's influence in contemporary India. In addition, the College has been awarded several Fulbright professorships:

  • Dr. Mohammed El Mansour, Morocco, Scholar in Residence, 2003-04 (History)
  • Dr. Omer Genckaya, Turkey, Visiting Specialist/Muslim World, 2005 (International Politics)
  • Dr. Ranajoy Bhattacharyya, India, Scholar in Residence, 2007-08 (Economics)

Roanoke students have explored the world beyond Salem in interesting ways, and there are a number of unusual success stories to report. For example:

  • Valedictorian of the class of 2005, Brandy Collier, who enrolled at the University of Ghana where she studied village life outside the capital of Accra
  • Tim Wright, who studied abroad in Argentina and worked for the CIES (Fulbright) office in Washington before taking a similar job in Mexico City (COMEXUS)
  • Sade Younger, who completed an internship in the College's outstanding Washington Semester Program, then studied abroad at the University of East Anglia (UK)
  • Tomasz Jemczura, a native of Poland, who studied abroad in Mexico, won the prestigious McGowan award for Business majors in the senior year, and completed a Summer Scholars Project under the direction of chairperson Dr. Larry Lynch. The Summer Scholars program offers 20 students each year a $2,500 award plus room and board for the summer of independent research.

Please consider joining our talented academic community and, once you are here, take part in the many international adventures sponsored by the College both on our campus and in the world at large.

With best wishes,

Yours sincerely,

Michael C. Maxey
President
