Congratulations to faculty & staff with current external funding:
Dr. Jack Steehler and Dr. Ben Huddle, Chemistry, have been awarded a three-year grant from the National Science Foundation. The project, "Real-Life Inquiry-Based GC/MS Experiments for General Education Chemistry Courses", will develop major enhancements to the general education chemistry courses, for both science majors and non-science majors. The project will also include an outreach component, consisting of a series of workshops for area high school teachers.
Dr. Len Pysh, Biology, has been awarded a two-year $100,00 research grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The research, "Coordination between Cellulose and Lignin Synthesis in Root Cell Walls", will test the hypothesis that increased lignin causes cell elongation to terminate prematurely, resulting in shorter cells (and shorter roots).
Dr. Chris Lassiter, Biology, as part of a five-person research team, was awarded a $263,000 grant from the Virginia Commonwealth Health Research Board (CHRB). The two-year grant will study estrogen's role in protecting the cardiovascular system from damage and degenerative diseases. Colonel James E. Turner of VMI is the principal investigator for the study.
Dr. Dolores Flores-Silva, Foreign Language, VFIC Mednic Fellowship to study late 20th Century Latin American film and literature at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and Filmoteca Nacional de Mexico.
Dr. Stella Xu, History, awarded a grant from the Northeast Asia Council, Association of Asian Studies, for research travel to Korea.
Ms Juliet Lowery, Multicultural Affairs, a Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges (VFIC) grant to support the College's Building On Diversity (BonD) Program.
Dr. Lynn Talbot, Foreign Language, authored a proposal to the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program, which resulted in a grant award to bring a Teaching Assistant from China to Roanoke College for the 2008-2009 Academic Year.
Dr. Cathrine Sarisky, Chemistry, a grant from the Thomas F. and Katie Miller Jeffress Memorial Trust to support a research project: "From peptide to protein: does context matter in beta-sheet register determination?"
Mr. Larry Walker, Business Affairs, a grant from the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges (VFIC) to install a card access security access system in a campus residence hall.
Dr. Adriene Bloss & Dr. Paul Hanstedt, three-year $452,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) to design, implement, and assess a faculty development program that facilitates integrative learning experiences for students.
Ms Teresa Jackson, Upward Bound, a four-year Depeartment of Education grant at $350,000 per year to support the Upward Bound Program.
Ms Kathryn Buchanan, Resource Development, a $100,000 grant from the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation for a partnership initiative with the Virginia and DC Luntheran Synods.
Dr. Tim Reynolds & Dr. Lisa Earp, Education. Roanoke College, as part of the Southwest Virginia Professional Education Consortium, received a $120,000 grant for three-years from the Virginia Department of Education. The program will foster an expanded system of teams of experienced, high quality PK-12 teachers and administrators and university faculty who assist pre-service and beginning teachers to make a successful transition into full-time teaching.
