International Student Application Requirements

To apply for admission to Roanoke College, please follow these steps:

Application
There are three applications options available for submission: the Common Application, the paper application, or an online application without fee. Both the Common Application and paper application should be sent along with the $30 application fee to Roanoke College, Admissions Office, 221 College Lane, Salem, VA 24153, USA.

Academic Transcripts and Records

Official transcripts and academic records need to be sent directly to Roanoke College from all high schools and secondary schools and universities that you have attended. The transcripts should indicate all of the completed courses, the final grades received and any certificates or diplomas awarded. The Admissions Office encourages students who are applying for the fall term of 2008 to submit their application by April 15, 2008.

For students applying for the spring term of 2009, the application deadline is
November 30, 2008.

Examination Results

  • Students who are applying as freshmen will need to submit their scores from at least one of the following examinations: A) SAT administered by the College Board, B) ACT administered by ACT, Inc., or C) National Examinations, official results must be sent from the country’s examining body (examples: "A" Levels from the United Kingdom, Abitur from Germany). The official score report for the SAT, ACT or national examinations should be sent to the College directly from the administrator of the test.
  • English Proficiency for non-native speakers: At least one of the following examinations is required of all students, both freshmen and transfers, whose native language is not English: A) TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) administered by the Educational Testing Service, B) IELTS (International English Language Test) jointly managed by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, or C) SAT administered by the College Board. The College’s admissions committee recommends a minimum score of 68 (Internet-based) or 190 (Computer-based) on the TOEFL and a score of six or higher on the IELTS. The average SAT score last year was 1123 (critical reading and math combined - doesn’t include writing score). For students interested in fall admission, we have an English as a Second Language Course that has a minimum of a 68 (Internet-based) TOEFL requirement. The official SAT score should be sent directly from the College Board. You may register online for the SAT, the IELTS and the TOEFL.

Financial Support Statement

All international applicants must send a bank-certified statement and/or other form of documentation indicating the annual resources available for their education, such as a letter of financial support. The statement should be sent with the application or supporting documents and is required for the issuance of an I-20 form.

*In addition to the above costs, students should consider that there might be additional costs for transportation and personal expenses. Keep in mind that Roanoke offers merit scholarships that range from $2,000-$18,000 annually for up to 4 years. Roanoke College loans are available for international students and do not require a U.S. co-signer. There is also a 10 month payment plan available.

**Health Insurance Coverage: All international students must have health insurance coverage. Students may purchase health insurance through the college's health insurance carrier or an independent insurance carrier. All health insurance purchased outside of the college carrier is subject to the approval of the Roanoke College Health Services Office.

***All new freshmen residing on campus MUST participate in the 19-meal plan. All other students, including transfers, may select a 14-meal plan at a cost of $4,310. Students residing at the Afton Hall Apartments may purchase a 9-meal plan for $2,770. Students living at Elizabeth Campus may opt out of either meal plan.

Scholarships
In order to be considered for academic scholarships, a student must first apply and be accepted to the college. No separate scholarship application is required. Scholarships are based upon high academic achievement.

Advanced Credit
Advanced credit may be awarded to qualified candidates taking the International Baccalaureate (IB) Higher Level Examinations or students taking Advanced Placement (AP) exams sponsored by the College Board Testing Program. Students must receive a four or five on an AP exam to receive credit. Students must receive a five, six or seven on an IB exam to receive credit. Results from university level national examinations such as the Cambridge A levels, French Baccalaureate, German Abitur, Caribbean CAPE, etc., may also qualify for advanced credit.
