Women's Forum 2009

In honor of Women's History Month, Roanoke College will host "Women's Forum 2009," a series of events March 15-22, 2009. This week-long celebration will include lectures, discussions, exhibitions, performances, and other events that feature or focus on women in areas across the liberal arts.

Sunday, March 15, 5:30 -7:00 p.m., Wortmann Ballroom

"Girls Fight Back!"

An interactive program aimed at preventing and fighting back against violence, combining cutting-edge safety training, empowerment and simple techniques that are easy to remember. The program is delivered in a comedic fashion, using a practical and down-to-earth approach to safety. For more details, check out the "Girls Fight Back!" website.

"The Clothesline Project" Opening

A display of shirts designed by victims of rape and their friends or family.

International Women's Day Reception

Honoring mothers, wives, sisters, friends and colleagues. To inspire women and celebrate their achievements. Activities include dance, music, special recognitions and a bilingual poetry reading performance of "Female Voices of Latin America/Voces femeninas de Latino América." This event is sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Hispanic Organization for Leadership & Achievement.

The Death Penalty in America: A Conversation with Sister Helen Prejean and Marie Deans

Sister Helen is a leading American advocate for the abolition of the death penalty. Her first book served as a basis for the feature film Dead Man Walking. Sister Helen is making a return visit to Roanoke College. Book sale and signing to follow the lecture. No tickets required.

"Is She Loose or Is She Liberated?"

Cofffee Shop Conversation with the RC Honors Program. Asking the question of whether or not the way women dress, talk, and act on college campuses means they are simply comfortable with themselves and their sexuality, or they are doing it for attention.

"Star Spangled Girls" performance

The Touring Theater Ensemble of North Carolina will perform this short play about women in World War II. No tickets required.

"Gender and Race: (What) Are They? (What) Do We Want Them To Be?"

Poetry Reading by Carol Guerrero-Murphy

Dr. Carol Guerrero-Murphy chairs the Department of English, Theatre, Communications and Foreign Language at Adams State College in Colorado. Her book Table Walking at Nighthawk (Ghost Road Press, 2007) received the WILLA Award, named for noted author Willa Cather.

Take Back the Night Rally

The rally provides awareness to the problem of widespread violence against women, provide survivors an opportunity to speak out and unite individuals who wish to work with others to make our community safer. The evening includes an open microphone for survivors, music and viewing of The Clothesline Project.
