What is classic about Roanoke College?
Roanoke's picturesque campus, complete with a breathtaking view of the Blue Ridge Mountains, truly makes Roanoke a classic Virginian college.
Why did you choose Roanoke College?
For me, choosing to attend Roanoke College was easy! During my first visit to the campus, I was immediately impressed by the quality of the faculty and staff. They were personable, knowledgeable, and seemed to take an active interest in the thoughts and opinions of the student body. That sealed the deal!
What is your favorite aspect of college life at Roanoke? Why?
I like knowing that whenever I walk across Roanoke's campus, there's always a familiar face nearby.
What was the most important thing you learned from a firsthand experience at Roanoke? (Ex. study abroad, internship, lab, research, leadership position, May Term, etc.)
Last semester, I had the opportunity to conduct a research experiment in one of my psychology courses that I actually designed myself. From that experience, I learned a great life lesson: much like research, life is about the process ? not the outcome.
What are some of your favorite things to do in the area? Favorite places?
I like visiting downtown Roanoke; it's great if you're looking for one-of-a-kind boutiques or if you want to grab a bite to eat. In addition, the Mill Mountain Star, which is the largest freestanding illuminated man-made star in the world, offers a spectacular view of the Roanoke Valley and downtown Roanoke. It?s a must-see!
How did you choose your major?
The professor who taught my Introductory to Psychology course exhibited great enthusiasm for the subject. His passion, which had then translated onto me, compelled me to take another course in psychology. After that, I was hooked!
How have you benefitted from a close relationship with a professor, staff member or friend?
Last fall, one of my professors put me in touch with a local clinical psychologist who was looking for a technical assistant to help him with his research. Not only was this the opportunity of a lifetime, but it allowed me to realize how deeply committed the faculty is to helping the students here succeed
What have you done that has been the most fun at Roanoke?
Sledding down the hill behind the Colket Center on lunch trays borrowed from the Commons was a blast! It was, by far, the best way to celebrate on a snow day.
What is your advice for future freshmen entering Roanoke College?
For future freshmen, when you arrive at Roanoke, get involved in a club or activity right away. It's a great way to meet other students!
What is your favorite thing about campus?
Kerr Stadium; it's a great way for students, faculty, and staff to come together and show some team spirit. Go Maroons!
