Majors, Minors & Concentrations in English
The English Department at Roanoke College offers a Major and Minor in English, Minors in American and British Literature and Concentrations in Communications and Creative Writing.
Major
English
The English curriculum is designed to provide students with opportunities to learn to read critically; to write and speak effectively; to think creatively; to use computers for the acquisition of knowledge as well as for the presentation of information; and to develop habits of self-reflection that will serve students well, either in graduate study or in a career. Students may study American literature, British literature, and world literatures as well as the English language, rhetoric and composition. The department seeks to create a supportive learning environment, which allows faculty and students to work together and which will have long-term, positive effects on students' lives.
Minors
English

American Literature
Students who complete a minor in American Literature will choose from a variety of literature courses designed to provide both an overview and an in-depth study of the important works and writers of the United States.
British Literature
Students who complete a minor in British Literature will choose from a variety of literature courses designed to provide both an overview and an in-depth study of the important works and writers of Great Britain.
Concentrations
Communications Concentration
The concentration in communications allows students to gain knowledge about the complex field of human communication.
Creative Writing Concentration
The concentration in creative writing offers students an in-depth experience in writing and literature. Students will study forms of poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction as they work on improving their own creative writing skills.
