SALEM, Va.- Roanoke College's Center for Religion and Society will host a debate between Richard Cizik of the National Association of Evangelicals and Thomas Derr, Christian ethicist from Smith College Friday, February 1 at 7:30 p.m. in Olin Theater. The topic will be "How Extensive is the Human Contribution to Global Warming and What Should the Churches Do About It?"

While it seems clear that the Earth's atmosphere is warming, a debate continues about the causes of global warming, especially surrounding whether and how much humans are responsible for the warming. Many church organizations have accepted the assumption that humans are responsible for most of it, and those organizations are working internally and externally to alleviate such warming.

Are they right in their assessments, and should they be so active in the cause of lessening the human causes of global warming? In the debate, the executive director of the National Association of Evangelicals, Richard Cizik, will argue the case that those churches are right in their activism. Arguing a case for more caution and less action will be Thomas Derr, ethicist at Smith College, who has written a text on ecological ethics.
