Roanoke College announces poetry reading by one of its own

SALEM, Va. -Roanoke College announces an opportunity for members of the community to hear a reading from a new book of poetry by a lecturer in the campus' English department. Cynthia Atkins, author of "Psyche's Weathers," (Custom Words, 2007) will offer a reading on Tuesday, February 19, in the Colket Center's Pickle Lounge at 5 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Using the theme of weather, Atkins divides the 54 poems in her book into four sections representing the four seasons. The book uses the weather as a metaphor to explore various mental and psychological states of the soul or psyche. The cover art is a colorful painting by Scott Kattenbraker. Atkins, of Lexington, is a founding member and the artistic director for Writers at Jordan House, a creative writing program sponsored by Fine Arts in Rockbridge. Atkins holds a bachelor of fine arts and a master of fine arts from the University of Illinois. She also holds a second master of fine arts from Columbia University's School of the Arts.
