The Department of Computer Science at Roanoke College offers a Bachelor of Science degree and a minor in Computer Science. Courses taught in the department span a variety of areas of computer science including Programming Languages, Compiler Construction, Theory of Computation, Analysis of Algorithms, Simulation, Operating Systems, and Database Systems. Some other areas of computer science, e.g., Parallel Processing and Graphics, are taught as independent study projects.

The departmental faculty regularly work with students on research projects, often leading to publications and presentations at conferences.

All the system administration, for maintaining the computer systems used in Computer Science courses, is done by students giving them invaluable hands-on experience in this area.

Degree Programs

The Computer Science Department at Roanoke College offers a Bachelor of Science degree as well as a minor in Computer Science.

Bachelor of Science

A Bachelor of Science degree with a major in computer science requires the satisfactory completion of 12 units in the areas of computer science, mathematics, and statistics to include:

• Computer Science 170, 220, 270, 370, 390, 425, 430,
• Mathematics 201;
• Statistics 202, and
• three additional units from computer science courses at or above the 300-level (one of these units may be Math 306 or Math 361).

Computer Science 120 is a prerequisite for the computer science courses and Mathematics 121 and 122 are prerequisites for the statistics and mathematics courses.

Minor

A minor in Computer Science requires the satisfactory completion of 6 units in the areas of computer science and mathematics:

• Computer Science 120, 170, 220, 270,
• two additional units from computer science courses at or above the 300-level.
