SALEM, Va. - Roanoke College will be hosting the inaugural lecture for the Teitlebaum Lecture in Jewish Studies on Sunday, April 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Wortmann Ballroom. The topic for the lecture is Judaism's Encounter with American Sports featuring Dr. Jeffrey S. Gurock. The event is open to the public at no charge and tickets are not required.

The newly-created lecture series has been made possible by a gift to the College from Salem residents Bob and Binki Teitlebaum in support of the Roanoke College history department and their efforts in promoting Jewish studies.

Teitlebaum, a former reporter for The Roanoke Times, developed his relationship with the College after he took several courses in the Roanoke College history department.

Gurock is Libby M. Klaperman Professor of Jewish History at Yeshiva University. He is the author or editor of thirteen books, including the award-winning work A Modern Heretic and a Traditional Community: Mordecai M. Kaplan, Orthodoxy and American Judaism. His most recent title is Judaism's Encounter with American Sports. Gurock served from 1982-2002 as associate editor of American Jewish History and is also a former chair of the Academic Council of the American Jewish Historical Society.

Roanoke College, the country's second oldest Lutheran-related college, is an independent, co-educational, four-year liberal arts college. Roanoke is one of just 276 colleges nationwide with a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest and most prestigious honor society. The Princeton Review names Roanoke as one of the "best in the Southeast." Roanoke's 2,000 students represent 40 states across the U.S. and 26 foreign countries.
