SALEM, Va. -Roanoke College and the City of Salem announce a "Memorial Tribute to Virginia Tech" on Wednesday, April 16, at noon. The event, which will take place at Salem's Farmer's Market, will begin with a minute of silence. At 12:01, there will be ringing of the bells, including the College's and also bells from the Salem Fire Department and churches throughout Salem. Bells will toll in honor of the victims of last year's tragic events.

The Reverend Adrian Dowell of Shiloh Baptist Church will offer an opening prayer of healing. Dowell is the father of Roanoke basketball star AJ Dowell. Following the prayer, Salem City Manager Kevin Boggess will offer words of welcome and encouragement to attendees.

A musical tribute will be presented by the Pride of Salem marching band, words from Roanoke's president, Mike Maxey and a musical tribute from Roanoke students will follow. Rev. R. Paul Henrickson, Roanoke's chaplain, will offer a closing prayer.

This memorial tribute will occur in accordance with Governor Kaine's call for a moment of silence and the tolling of bells at noon on April 16. Kaine also has called for flags to be lowered to half mast on this date.

The rain location for this event is Roanoke College's Wortmann Ballroom located in the Colket Center.

Roanoke College, the country's second oldest Lutheran-related college, is an independent, co-educational, four-year liberal arts college. Roanoke is one of just 276 colleges nationwide with a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest and most prestigious honor society. The Princeton Review names Roanoke as one of the "best in the Southeast." Roanoke's 2,000 students represent 40 states across the U.S. and 26 foreign countries.
