Local Service

Refugee and Immigration Services
Many people arrive in Roanoke with only the clothes on their backs and a new world in front of them. You can be a part of helping these families transition into a new environment.

Trail Work
There are a variety of sites in the Roanoke Valley where you can help to protect your local environment. Roanoke Greenways, Carvin's Cove, and the Appalachian Trail are all ten miles from campus.

Tutoring
The Center for Community Service provides tutors for eight public elementary schools and a variety of after school programs in our area. Contact us today  to serve students in need near you.

After School Programs
The West End Center, St. John's Community Youth Center and the Presbyterian Community Center all are in need of volunteers to work with inner city youth in downtown Roanoke.

Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity is an international, non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry seeking to eliminate poverty and home-lessness. Each year Roanoke College builds a house with Habitat in Roanoke City.  The group meets on weeknights to plan, and build every Saturday morning.

Head Start
Head Start is committed to cultivating the healthy development of pre-school children and their families. Join other Roanoke students as they help local pre-school children get a "head start" on their education. The center is an easy walk from campus. The morning playtime with the children runs Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Student volunteers are also needed to help with program planning weekdays from 1 to 3 p.m.

Housing and Feeding Programs
Many in the Roanoke Valley are in dire need of assistance and receive aid from agencies like the Rescue Mission,  the Salem Food Pantry and the Second Harvest Food Bank. There are many ways you can help the hungry and homeless.

RAM House
The RAM House is a day-shelter providing lunch and shelter for the homeless of Roanoke. Volunteers are needed from 9 to 11:30 a.m. to help prepare each day's meal or from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to help serve lunch. Over the past few years, Roanoke students have helped serve 10 percent of the RAM House meals. Schedules for volunteer opportunities are posted monthly.

Bradley Free Clinic
This health clinic in Roanoke City not only provides great health care, but also free prescription medication to many in need in our area. Students help with check-in, intakes, and foreign language translation.
