National Service
Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity is an international, non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry seeking to eliminate poverty and home-lessness. Each fall and spring break the Center for Community Service hosts a trip to Columbia, South Carolina. Students on these trips participate in everything from hammering nails to hanging out with their families and their kids while learning a lot about how others in our country live their lives.

Appalachian Plunge
Students leave on a Thursday evening and travel to St. Paul, Virginia (located in the western part of the state.) Volunteers participate in home improvement service activities for people who cannot afford the upkeep of their homes. The Appalachian Plunge takes a good look at the culture of the western part of Virginia. Participants enjoy learning about coal mining and visiting the Carter Family Fold.

Urban Plunge
Each spring, a group of Roanoke College students travel to Washington, D.C., to provide service for the homeless and need of the nation's capital. Depending on the number of students involved, several groups work at different service sites throughout the area. These sites can include soup kitchens, homeless shelters and other volunteer organizations. While the purpose of the trip is service related, there also are several activities planned for fellowship among the students.

Relief Efforts
In times when disaster strikes an area, the Roanoke College Center for Community Service makes it a priority to respond with aid. In 2005, Roanoke students spent part of winter break repairing homes in Slidell, Louisiana. If you are interested in participating in such Relief Efforts, please contact the Center for Community Service.
