Do I Fit at Roanoke?

Health and Human Performance Major & Athletic Training

  • All athletic training students complete a 120-hour senior internship with the team orthopedist and local physical therapists where they observe surgeries and work directly with patients.
  • A bi-annual joint dissection in the anatomy cadaver lab is performed by the team orthopedist each year. All athletic training students participate.
  • All junior students complete a field experience with a local high school football team.
  • Roanoke graduates outperform the national average pass rate on the board of certification exam for athletic training. In fact, 53% of Roanoke graduates passed on their first attempt compared to just 35% nationally.
  • Graduates have gone on to become head athletic trainers at the college level including one who became the undergraduate athletic training program director at the University of Florida. Others have worked in professional sports, such as NFL Europe and Arena Football, and others have worked in hospitals and clinics around the country.

The Department of Health and Human Performance at Roanoke College provides quality programs for its students.  Students can major in HHP and choose to major in Athletic Training.  Within the HHP major students are offered classes that are emphasized in different fields (Exercise Science, Exercise and Sports Management, Physical Activity and Aging and Sports Communication).  Our aim is to advance the study of exercise, sport and athletic training to promote life balance, wellness and peak performance.
