Reginald Hutcherson, Alumnus Demonstrates Appreciation Through Estate Gift

Remembering how grateful he was for the scholarship assistance that he received as a student at Roanoke College has motivated Reginald Hutcherson ’52 to give back to the school that was so generous to him.  Hutcherson and Mary Alice, his wife, have chosen to help future Roanoke students by creating a charitable gift annuity.

“When I went to Roanoke College, I was greatly helped because of a basketball scholarship,”  Hutcherson remembers.  “I would not have been able to go to college at all if I had not had financial aid.  I feel that Roanoke College has benefited me to the point where it helped to make me successful in my career – and as a result I want to show my appreciation and also help other worthy students.  That’s the reason we gave this gift.”

After graduating from Roanoke College, Hutcherson went on to work for the First Federal Saving & Loan for a total of 34 years, eventually holding the title of president.  He points to his education as being the prime reason for his success.

“We were happy to be able to give this gift, and we were very fortunate to be able to do it.  But it’s not something that my wife and I could have done without the success that I had experienced in my professional life.  That success is something that I attribute to my education at Roanoke College.”

Hutcherson says that this gift also made sense when it came time for him and his wife to plan their estate.

“A gift like this may cut your eventual estate tax by reducing your total estate pretax.  You can give your estate to you heirs, to a charity or to the government.  Of course, Mary Alice and I want our heirs to benefit from out estate, but we would also like to be able to support Roanoke College.  We believe this is a win-win situation.”
